A day with a Funeral Director by Justine, Apprentice CPS Community Nurse

A day with a Funeral Director by Justine, Apprentice CPS Community Nurse

Today I had the privilege of spending a day with Ryan, a Funeral Director at Jonathan Alcock & Sons Ltd, to gain a deeper understanding of the work that goes into providing this essential service.

From the moment I arrived, Ryan took the time to walk me through every aspect of the process, explaining in detail the journey a family goes through when arranging a funeral. His approach was not only professional but also deeply compassionate, emphasising that funeral care is not just about logistics it’s about supporting people through grief and making sure their loved one’s wishes are honoured.

Ryan showed me the different areas within Brook House, including the arrangement rooms where families come to discuss their plans, the preparation areas where meticulous care is taken to look after those in their care, and the ceremonial vehicles that provide a dignified final journey. It was clear that every part of the process is handled with immense respect and attention to detail.

One of the things that struck me most was how much dedication goes into this profession. Ryan spoke about how every service is unique, tailored to reflect the life and personality of the individual who has passed away. Whether it’s organising traditional services, religious ceremonies, or more contemporary celebrations of life, the role of a funeral director is to ensure everything runs smoothly while providing emotional support to grieving families.

He also highlighted the amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into each service, from liaising with churches, crematoriums, and cemeteries to ensuring that even the smallest details such as music, flowers, and order of service booklets are exactly as the family wishes.

Spending the day with Ryan was an eye-opening experience. I walked away with a newfound appreciation for the dedication, care, and professionalism that Funeral Directors bring to their work. It’s a role that requires not only organisational skills but also deep empathy and an unwavering commitment to supporting families at their most vulnerable.

A huge thank you to Jonathan Alcock & Sons and Ryan for allowing me to step into their world for a day. It was a privilege to see first-hand the level of care and respect that goes into every service they provide.
