Cheadle Community Heritage Trail

Cheadle Community Heritage Trail

The Cheadle Community Trail is a free, community-led activity suitable for all the family to get involved with. As part of a year-long project by Cheadle Civic Society to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s death, several new Information Boards have been installed throughout Cheadle Village.

You may or may not be aware that Cheadle has an intriguing connection to Agatha Christie and her renowned literary works.

Agatha Christie’s elder sister, ‘Madge,’ resided in Cheadle with her husband, James Watts, from 1902 until her death in 1950. One of their residences was Abney Hall, which is thought to have greatly influenced the iconic country house settings that are so prominently featured in Agatha’s writing!

Several of Agatha’s novels are dedicated to Abney Hall and members of her extended family in Cheadle.

The Trail is part of a series of events, including walks, talks, exhibitions and community gatherings organised by Cheadle Civic Society to celebrate this fascinating connection with Agatha Christie.

These events aim to attract both visitors and locals, serving as a valuable educational resource for students and learners, while also providing an engaging glimpse into our village’s ties with the world’s most famous crime writer!

As the oldest established firm in Cheadle, we are thrilled to be part of the Trail. You can find our information board in the plantation area at the front of our Funeral Home (Brook House) on Brook Road.

The Trail will connect key heritage landmarks, green spaces, and community hubs across Cheadle, including:

  • Jonathan Alcock and Sons
  • St. Mary’s Parish Church
  • Abney Hall
  • Cheadle Conservation Area (Cheadle Green)
  • Brooklyn Crescent Park
  • Cheadle Primary School
  • Cheadle Green
