Meet Caroline Clegg – Funeral Celebrant

Meet Caroline Clegg – Funeral Celebrant

by Dr Caroline Clegg

Why I am a celebrant

Being a celebrant is the most blessed role I have ever undertaken. It is not a job; it is a privilege. It is an honour to share those quiet moments with the family and friends of someone who has died, and simply to listen at first. Then, slowly, to talk together, share memories and gently find a way to create a beautiful farewell. There is often laughter through the tears as we find a way that feels right for everyone, celebrating their life in a personal way, with a service that is as unique as they were.

I have spent my life working in classical music, poetry and song, and it seemed a gentle and natural step to bring those expressions of love together in becoming a celebrant. I was inspired and mentored by my dear friend Mia Creely, who had been a celebrant for some time. We began to talk about the possibility of me joining her, and I knew deep inside that it was right. Mia offered to train and mentor me.

Then, quite suddenly, a very close friend of mine lost her son, whom I had known since he was a baby. She asked whether Mia might take his service, and Mia agreed. But then Mia said to me, “It’s not me that she needs, it’s you.”

I have a spiritual faith, and I reflected on her words that night. The feeling inside me deepened into an absolute conviction that I would take their service and be there alongside my dearest friend and her family. That conviction has remained with me ever since, and each service is as special and as precious as the first.

With love and gentleness, we will bring together music, memories and the story of your loved one’s life, finding a way to celebrate them while also acknowledging your loss and the changes that lie ahead. I share my writing with you so that you can read it, make any amendments you wish and feel at peace, knowing that you have done your very best for someone you love so dearly.

I believe a service is a beautiful and important ritual that can begin a slow healing process, and that journey is different for everybody. Whether you have a big family or just a few close friends, coming together is an expression of dignity and love.

Whether you would like a service that is gently religious, draws on your own spiritual beliefs, or is entirely non-religious, I will work with you to create something that feels right for you and reflects the person you have lost. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye, and you may not know what you want at the beginning, but we will discover that together, one step at a time.

As your celebrant, I feel honoured to play a small part in shaping your service, speaking on your behalf or alongside you at this very special and personal time. I will be there for you with love, gentleness and respect.
