29 Apr Meet Kathyrn Walkden – Funeral Celebrant
I’m a qualified Funeral Celebrant based in Manchester and Stockport, and I’m happy to travel further afield.
I grew up in a close, working-class family, and my Dad was a Funeral Director, so funerals were always just a part of life for me. It wasn’t something I went straight into, but it was always there in the background.
I’ve spent over 25 years working in the funeral profession, starting as a Funeral Arranger and later working as a Funeral Director and Manager. I went on to manage a cluster of 11 funeral homes across Manchester and Stockport. In that time, I’ve met a lot of families, all different, all trying to do their best for someone they love.

The part that always stayed with me was the time spent sitting with people, listening to their stories, and getting a real sense of the person who had died. That’s the part that matters most to me.
Becoming a Celebrant has let me focus on that.
I know that meeting someone like me for the first time can feel a bit daunting. But I often find that once people start talking about their loved one, things begin to feel a little easier. It’s not unusual for there to be a few smiles, and sometimes even a bit of laughter along the way. By the end of it, people often say they feel a little lighter, just having had the chance to talk and remember.
There’s no set way of doing things. Some families know exactly what they want, others have no idea where to start, and most are somewhere in the middle. I just take things as they come, have a conversation, and we figure it out together.
I know this can be a difficult time, and sometimes even the simplest decisions can feel like a lot. I’m there to help take a bit of that weight off, keep things steady, and make sure it all comes together in a way that feels right.
Alongside my experience, I continue to build on my understanding of grief and bereavement to support families as fully as I can.
