05 Feb The importance of our Bereavement Support Group by Wendy Priscott
Join us on the first Tuesday of every month for our Bereavement Support Group where we hope to provide a warm, welcoming, and safe space to chat and share with others in a similar situation; bringing comfort and support at difficult times.
Here, Wendy Priscott has kindly shared her story on how the group has helped her.
I first went to the Bereavement Group, (hosted by Jonathan Alcock and Sons and George Hill Funeral Directors), three months after I was widowed as I just felt that I needed to be in a space around other bereaved people who may understand what I was experiencing.
I didn’t know what to expect from the group, or whether I’d ever want to go again. However, it’s 15 months later and I’ve never missed one and it’s in my diary for the rest of the year.
We are a group of people who have all lost somebody close to us so we all have an understanding of bereavement, even if it’s different for everyone of us in terms of who we’ve lost or how we’ve lost somebody.
I love the relaxed, welcoming format of the group. It’s facilitated by Mark and Sarah who check in on everyone throughout the morning…and keep us topped up with tea and cake!
It’s a chance to sit and chat, and that chat might be general stuff, or it might be around our grief. Everyone in the group is always willing to sit with someone else’s grief and it’s a space where sadness is welcomed not avoided. There’s also lots of laughter and a place where we keep our loved one’s memories alive.
It means there is never any pressure to be anything in the group other than what you want to make of it and it’s this I think which is such a lovely experience.
For me, I needed a space where I could just be bereaved; in other walks of life I’m somebody’s mum, I’m somebody’s daughter, I’m a business owner. So for me having the group means it’s the only space I have where I can just be bereaved and for me that is an absolute lifeline.
