Bereavement Education – Support for Schools, Colleges and Youth Groups

Supporting Schools with Bereavement Education

Bereavement education now forms part of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), helping children and young people develop an age-appropriate understanding of grief, loss and bereavement.

Talking openly about death and loss can help reduce fear and uncertainty, encourage healthy conversations, and provide reassurance to children who may already have experienced the death of a loved one, family changes or the loss of a pet.

As experienced Funeral Directors, we understand that these conversations can feel sensitive and are committed to supporting schools, colleges and youth groups in delivering them with care and compassion.

Using guidance from Child Bereavement UK alongside our own professional experience, we can support educational settings in introducing bereavement in a thoughtful, age-appropriate and sensitive way.

We can help by:

  • Delivering age-appropriate classroom sessions and discussions.
  • Providing guidance and advice for school staff.
  • Signposting pupils and families to trusted bereavement support organisations and resources.
  • Offering a gentle introduction to conversations about grief, loss and funerals.
  • Recommending age-appropriate books and educational resources.
  • Answering questions in an open, supportive and reassuring environment.

We are happy to discuss sessions that complement your existing RSHE curriculum and can tailor content to suit the age and needs of your pupils.

Memorial Post Box

Outside our Funeral Home in Cheadle, we have a Letters to Loved Ones Memorial Post Box, where children and families can post letters or messages to someone they have lost.

Writing a letter can be a comforting way for children to express emotions, reflect on memories or simply say the things they wish they could still say. The post box can be used independently, as part of a class activity or alongside a school visit where appropriate.

About Us

We have been serving the bereaved communities of Stockport for over 160 years, supporting families through some of life’s most difficult moments with professionalism, dignity and compassion. You can read more about our History here.

We are proud members of both the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), adhering to their Codes of Practice. Our Funeral Directors are either qualified with the Diploma in Funeral Directing or are working towards their professional qualifications.

Our Company Director, Sarah, is a qualified Funeral Director who has taken part in bereavement education sessions exploring how Funeral Directors can support schools and local communities. Through her involvement in her daughter’s extracurricular activities, she also holds a Chaperone Licence and is DBS checked.

Alongside caring for bereaved families, we regularly work with local schools and colleges through careers events, presentations and student work placements. We have also collaborated with District Nurses and Palliative Care teams, sharing our knowledge to help support the wider community. You can read more about this project here.

If you would like to find out more about how we can support your school, college or youth group, or discuss your requirements, we would be pleased to hear from you.
