11 Aug Trade and Membership Associations and Consumer Standards – who and what are they?
A Trade Association is a non-profit, member-based organisation founded and funded by businesses operating in a specific industry.
These groups represent their members’ collective interests by lobbying policymakers, setting industry standards, and providing networking, training, and market research.
For the funeral industry, a trade association is an organisation that represents Funeral Homes, Funeral Directors, and suppliers. Key groups include the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF). They set professional standards, offer training, and speak with the government for the profession. But membership of these organisations is voluntary.
If you are choosing a Funeral Director, looking for a Funeral Industry Trade Association logo – like that of the NAFD or SAIF – indicates that the firm:
- Abides by a strict Code of Practice, requiring transparent pricing and dignified care for the deceased.
- Is subject to independent monitoring and regular inspections.
- Gives you access to an independent dispute resolution scheme if you are unhappy with their service.

Trade and Membership Associations
The National Association of Funeral Directors – NAFD
The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) is the largest, oldest and most inclusive trade association for the UK funeral profession, representing thousands of funeral homes across the country.
The NAFD supports its members in delivering high standards of care for those who have died and provides bereaved people with information and assurance to help them choose a compassionate, professional and experienced Funeral Director that they can trust.
Established in 1905, the NAFD represents the entire spectrum of funeral directing businesses, including independent and family-owned firms, co-operatives and major funeral groups. The NAFD has more than 3,800 UK funeral homes in membership, as well as international firms and suppliers to the sector – providing advice, advocacy, education and support to help them meet the highest professional standards.
The NAFD is a trusted advisor to Government, helping to shape the policy landscape in all four UK nations, by;
- providing funeral consumers with advice on choosing a Funeral Director
- delivering a comprehensive framework of training and qualifications to help funeral service employees provide compassionate and exemplary professional care
- hosting regional and national events that bring the profession together, including the biennial National Funeral Exhibition – one of the world’s leading funeral sector events.

The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors – SAIF
The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) is a UK trade association representing over 1000 privately owned, independent Funeral Directors, as well as an additional 100 Associate members who supply products or services to the funeral profession.
Established in 1989, it supports family-owned businesses, promotes industry best practices, and provides a strict code of practice for consumer protection.
Its key functions are;
- Representation: Speaks for independent Funeral Directors in local and national government discussions.
- Standards: Runs regular inspections and training programs to maintain high levels of client care.
- Consumer Support: Offers a formal complaints process and specialised bereavement support resources.
The NAFD also sets high standards for its members. NAFD member firms must abide by the Funeral Director Code – their comprehensive Code of Practice, developed in consultation with the wider sector and consumer organisations. Funeral home members are regularly inspected by the NAFD inspectorate team and are offered guidance and support in reaching the highest standards.
They also provide access to an independent complaints scheme for funeral consumers, NAFD Resolve, which operated on their behalf by the Centre of Effective Dispute Resolution.

The British Institute of Funeral Directors – B.I.F.D
The British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) is a professional membership organisation and educational body.
Founded in 1982 by members of the NAFD, it is the pre-eminent provider of education for the UK funeral profession while enabling members of the public to identify Funeral Directors that offer the best possible professional services.
The Institute is dedicated to the education and professional development of individuals within the funeral career path, focusing on high standards of training and a strict code of ethics within the UK funeral profession. Through its Continual Professional Development, accredited courses and best practice, the BIFD is committed to helping practitioners best serve the bereaved.

The British Institute of Embalmers – BIE
The British Institute of Embalmers (BIE) is the primary professional membership and educational organisation for embalmers in the UK. It was founded in 1927 by a group of 15 Funeral Directors who recognised the need for a separate organisation for the professional embalmer.
The British Institute of Embalmers is made up of over 1500 full members and students, governed by an array of committees and groups.

The Good Funeral Guild
The Good Funeral Guild is a UK membership network and social enterprise created by the Good Funeral Guide to support better, more meaningful funeral practices. The Good Funeral Guide CIC is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to supporting, empowering and representing the interests of dying and bereaved people in the UK.

Funeral Suppliers Association – FSA
Formerly the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers’ Association (FFMA) the Funeral Suppliers’ Association (FSA) is a focused and dedicated Trade Association in the UK created to fully support in a variety of ways all those businesses selling or seeking to sell to and serving the funeral sector.
It aims to safeguard and improve the traditional high standards of products and services that their members provide, providing a link between manufacturers & services of goods and suppliers to the funeral sector.
Established in 1939, it has over 80 members all of whom either manufacture, supply or provide services to the funeral sector.
The FSA works tirelessly to ensure its members are well represented within the industry and, working alongside other funeral sector trade associations, represent members’ interests on both the Deceased Management Advisory Group (DMAG) and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Funerals and Bereavement.

Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities – FBCA
The Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) is the UK’s only Trade Association representing burial, cremation, and other funerary method providers.
The FBCA supports its members in upholding and advancing the standards of burial, cremation, and other funerary methods. Through collaboration, training and knowledge sharing, they support the maintaining of compliance and excellence. They provide trusted resources and work closely with regulatory bodies to shape effective policy and uphold the highest standards across the sector.

Regulatory and Market Oversight
Regulatory and Market Oversight for the funeral industry consists of government and consumer protection rules, price transparency mandates, and quality standards enforcement. These are designed to safeguard grieving families from unfair costs and inadequate service.
Competition and Markets Authority – CMA
The Competition and Markets Authority exists to promote a fair and competitive environment, where businesses and the UK economy thrive, and consumers can be confident they are getting great choices and fair deals.
It legally mandates that all Funeral Directors display standardised pricing both online and at their premises to protect and inform consumers.

Financial Conduct Authority – FCA
The Financial Conduct Authority enables a fair and thriving financial services market for the good of consumers and the economy.
In the context of the funeral industry, this pertains to the regulation of Pre-paid Funeral Plans in the UK, focusing on fair pricing, the security of customer funds, and integrity in sales practices (rather than regulating individual, traditional at-need Funeral Director services). This means that any provider or intermediary of Funeral Plans must be authorised by the FCA; selling Pre-paid Funeral Plans without the appropriate authorisation is a criminal offence, unless the seller is an exempt entity, such as a solicitor.

In Summary
We have highlighted the main Trade Associations and Membership Institutions, yet there are many that govern and oversee all elements of the Funeral and Bereavement industry.
These organisations play a crucial role in upholding professional standards and fostering ethical practices within the industry. They provide guidelines, training, and certifications to ensure that funeral service providers maintain high levels of professionalism and empathy in their services.
While membership in these associations is not compulsory, it often reflects a dedication to quality and ethical practices from the funeral service provider, giving consumers peace of mind.
Additionally, these organisations act as a platform for professionals to exchange knowledge, support one another, and advocate for the industry’s broader interests. Through workshops, conferences, and publications, they help ensure that Funeral Directors are equipped to deliver compassionate and respectful services to families during their times of need.
